Barbara Braffett, Ph.D

Barbara H. Braffett, PhD., Assistant Research Professor joined the Biostatistics Center in August 2004. She is currently the director and co-investigator of the NIDDK-sponsored DCCT/EDIC (Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Interventions and Complications)Data Coordinating Center and co-investigator for the TODAY2 long-term follow-up study of the Treatment Options for T2D in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY)cohort. In these projects, Dr. Braffett has been involved in all aspects from study design to monitoring to data analysis and archival. In addition, Dr. Braffett has been responsible for the design, coordination, monitoring, and analysis of several DCCT/EDIC ancillary studies, and is currently the Coordinating Center PI for two studies: one designed to explore the role of DNA methylation in diabetes complications progression and metabolic memory (Epigenetic Markers of Complications and Metabolic Memory in the DCCT/EDIC Cohort) and the other designed to evaluate the relationship between hypoglycemia and cardiac rhythm in patients with T1D (Relationship of Hypoglycemia and Arrhythmia in Long-term T1D). Her previous work also included an extensive study of cognitive impairment in both adults and adolescents living with T1D, as well as a series of papers reporting the effects of diabetes-related complications on health related quality of life outcomes and various behavioral and psychosocial factors related to diabetes outcomes. Beyond data analysis, Dr. Braffett's interests include developing strategies to improve data management and quality.
