Dr. Elizabeth Thom, Ph.D., and former Center Director (2012-2018), joined the Biostatistics Center in 1986 and has been the Principal Investigator of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Units Network (MFMU) and for the Management Of Myelomeningocele (MOMS) study since 2002. She was also the Principal Investigator of the data coordinating center for a multi-center randomized clinical trial of chorionic villus sampling versus amniocentesis at 11 to 14 weeks gestation, Early Amniocentesis And Late Transabdominal CVS (EATA). All of these projects have been funded by National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD). She has over 30 years experience as a biostatistician in the United States, Canada and England, with 18 years directly related to the conduct of multi-center clinical trials. Dr. Thom provides biostatistical expertise and support in the design, execution, data processing and analysis of multi-center clinical trials and epidemiological studies.

Dr. Thom serves as a member of the Data and Safety Monitoring Committees for several National Institutes of Health (NIH) and World Health Organization (WHO)sponsored projects. She has co-authored numerous articles presenting results of clinical studies, which have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA, among other journals. Dr. Thom received her PhD in Statistics from The George Washington University in 1992.
