The Biostatistics Center provides data management and analysis for this project, which is designed to establish a centralized genetics strategy in Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study(DPPOS), in order
1) to coordinate genetic analyses so that unnecessarily redundant and wasteful studies would not be performed;
2) assure high quality analyses; and
3) carry out the genetic studies mandated in the DPP protocol.

The aims of the Genetics Core are:
1) to determine whether common or rare variation in five genes associated with mature onset diabetes predicts the development of type 2 diabetes in the DPP cohort;
2) to determine whether common variation in genes that encode hypoglycemic drug targets predicts rate of development of type 2 diabetes in the DPP participants;
3) to determine whether common variation in mitochondrial and other genes implicated in insulin resistance, beta cell function, exercise, obesity, and energy utilization predict development of type 2 diabetes in the DPP cohort, and whether risk is altered in subjects treated with a lifestyle intervention, metformin or troglitazone; and
4) to enable other investigators interested in testing genetic hypotheses in the DPP.
