Joe W. Ramsdell, M.D. is Professor and Division Head of General
Internal Medicine/Geriatrics at the University of California, San Diego. He
graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his
residency training in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Pulmonary
Medicine at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Ramsdell is board
certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Pulmonary Disease and has
been a faculty member at UCSD since 1975.
Other responsibilities include Director of the UCSD Clinical Trials Center
and Director of the Geriatric and Primary Care Fellowship Programs at UCSD.
These programs train fellows from multiple departments such as Preventive
and Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Neuroscience and Psychiatry. He founded
and continues to direct the UCSD SOCARE Program, a multidisciplinary
geriatric assessment clinic specializing in the problems of frail elderly
patients. Dr. Ramsdell's research interests focus on BPH, chronic diseases
of aging including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He
also researches outcomes of health care delivery systems serving frail and
elderly patients with a special interest in home care.
