Joseph A. Smith, Jr., M.D. received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis. He completed a surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas and a urology residency at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He completed a ur
ologic oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City before returning to the University of Utah as a professor in the Division of Urology. Dr. Smith was appointed William L. Bray Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urologic Surgery at Vanderb
ilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennesee in 1991. Along with his research in BPH, Dr. Smith's primary interest has been in the surgical and multi-disciplinary management of urologic cancers.
Dr. Smith is Program Director for the urology residency program at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Smith is Secretary of the Society of Urologic Oncology, Vice Chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Urology, and a Trustee of the American Board of Urology. He has served on a numb
er of National Cancer Institute special study sections.
