Overview of the WAVE Trial
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women in the
United States, accounting for more deaths than all other causes combined.
The Women's Angiographic Vitamins and
Estrogen study is a study of women who already have some degree
of heart disease. Its purpose is to determine whether the use of
vitamins (C and E) and estrogen can prevent the worsening of heart
disease.
Who is eligible
Post-menopausal women are potentially eligible if
- an initial angiogram shows a buildup of plaque in their
coronary arteries.
- they are not currently on hormone replacement therapy, or are willing
to stop for the duration of the study.
Over 400 women will be enrolled in the study.
What is required of the patients
Patients will have an initial angiogram to determine the extent of
plaque buildup in their coronary arteries. Three years after entry in
the study, patients receive a follow-up angiogram to determine whether
the conditions of their arteries has improved.
During the course of the study, patients will receive study
medication and will be in the care of top experts in heart disease in
the United States, with checkup visits every six months.
